DHS Honors St. John's University for HOPE Participation.
For HOPE 2010, more than 150 St. John's University students turned out to help survey the City's unsheltered homeless population, the most volunteers from any one organization. To show DHS' appreciation, Commissioner Robert V. Hess presented a citation thanking them for their "unyielding dedication to the community, and an exemplary desire to serve New Yorkers in need through outstanding participation in HOPE 2010." The presentation was made on the court at Madison Square Garden during a men's basketball game on February 27. Pictured with Commissioner Hess (far right) are James P. Pellow, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer; Rev. James J. Maher, Vice President for Student Affairs; Darren Morton, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs; Maggie Bach, Coordinator of Leadership Development and Service; Melissa Gibilaro, Vincentian Service Coordinator; and several St. John's students.

DHS has released an update on the work of the Operation Home Task Force. In December 2006, Mayor Bloomberg and then-Veterans Affairs Secretary James Nicholson created the Operation Home Task Force, a joint effort between DHS and the VA charged with ending the need for any veteran to sleep on the City’s streets or in shelters.
