In his first official event as Fire Commissioner, Salvatore Cassano presided over a promotions ceremony for eight members of the FDNY’s Emergency Medical Service, including two chiefs and six lieutenants.

“Our emergency medical service is the best in the nation, if not the world, because of the members,” he said during the Jan. 8 ceremony at FDNY Headquarters. “Without their dedication and commitment, we’d be just another department.”

Among the promoted members was Division Chief Albert Gehres and Deputy Chief Bruce Medjuck, who now will lead EMS Division 3 in Brooklyn.

The six lieutenants represent 50 years of service to the Department.

“Our members work together as a committed, dedicated, professional team,” said Chief of EMS John Peruggia. “A team that today grows in leadership.”
