The FDNY joined ABC 7, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Kidde, New Jersey Fire Department, Fireman’s Association of the State of New York, Toyota and Home Depot to launch the Operation 7 Save-A-Life campaign on Jan. 20 at the ESPN Zone in Manhattan.

The eleventh annual campaign includes a 30-minute television program that will appear on ABC 7, urging New Yorkers to practice fire safety.

“Last year we recorded the fewest fire fatalities in 90 years,” said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano. “But until we have zero fire deaths, I won’t be happy, and I won’t stop trying to help educate New Yorkers about fire safety. We want to make this the safest city in the world.”

In the United States, 11 people die each day in fires and 83 percent of these fire fatalities occur in the home. More than half of the fire fatalities in the home occur in residences without smoke alarms.

“I’m proud to be a part of this campaign,” said ABC 7 Anchor Bill Ritter. “We’re making a big difference and saving lives.”

Operation 7 Save-A-Life will air on Sat., Jan. 30, on ABC 7 at 7:30 p.m.
