Harvey Keitel, Jerry Orbach, John Turturro, Whoopi Goldberg and Kristin Davis Star in Short Film to Promote NYC as Film and Entertainment Center
April 29, 2003 The New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting (MOFTB) premiered "Beyond The Skyline" -- a short film designed to promote NYC as a location for entertainment production -- at the Tribeca Film Festival on May 6. Featuring some of New York City's popular talent, including Keitel, Orbach, Turturro, Goldberg and Davis, the film was created by the MOFTB in association with the Saline Project. It was produced with support from local labor unions, and generous assistance from Panavision NY, Kodak, Moving Images, Sony Music Studios, The Creative Coalition, the NYPD Movie/TV Unit, various City agencies and numerous New York City vendors and businesses.

Directors Justin Francis and Adam Toht interviewed the actors about their preference for shooting in the City. "New York City is probably the greatest backdrop in the world," said Jerry Orbach. Whoopi Goldberg praised the authenticity of New York City: "You can't mistake Canada, anywhere in Canada, for New York. New York on the other hand, has elements of every city in the world in it."

"What could be a better medium to sell New York City to filmmakers, than an original short film, made in New York and starring some of the City's most popular talent?" said Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting. "I expect that this film will be a sensational marketing tool for us, and I plan to showcase it to all of our potential domestic and international clients in the months ahead."

Oliver has been working closely with local labor, entertainment executives and state officials to develop new incentives for the film and television industries.

To produce the piece, the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre & Broadcasting commissioned a group of young and upcoming filmmakers, The Saline Project, to present the City as the ideal setting for all types of production. Over the course of two weeks, directors of the Saline Project, Justin Francis and Adam Toht, captured 24 diverse locations around the City. The production team traveled from the top of the Empire State Building, to the depths of the city's subways, through a Tugboat Graveyard in Staten Island and across Manhattan's Skyline with helicopter pilot Al Cerullo.
