CITY SIMPLIFIES PARKING RULES

The Giuliani Administration has simplified existing parking regulations to make it easier for motorists to understand where and when they can legally park on New York City streets. This new policy was developed jointly by the Department of Transportation, the Police Department, and the Department of Sanitation.

Since 1992, the City has had different parking rules for Street Cleaning (SCR) and for Alternate Side Parking (ASP), which only refers to regulations that provide for improved mobility and traffic flow. Many motorists and the news media have continued to refer to Street Cleaning rules as Alternate Side Parking. Since the two sets of regulations were suspended on different days, there was often confusion over which regulations were in effect.

Under the new policy, the City will always suspend all regulations which require alternate side parking, whether for street cleaning purposes or traffic flow, simultaneously on 32 days a year. This will end any confusion over where and when a person needs to move his or her car. In addition, parking signs are being updated to eliminate outdated information.

Following a brief rule change process, this new rule should go into effect by early September 1997.
