Animated characters promote recycling with humor and music. Initially developed in 2001, these ads ran in English and Spanish from April through June 2001 on network and cable stations. When the recycling program was restored in 2004 after cutbacks, the ads ran in English in Spring 2004 on cable and network stations.

This spot features then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani meeting with children at City Hall to teach about recycling. The ad aired on broadcast and cable stations.

This spot promotes DSNY’s compost giveback events. Customized with giveback dates, the ad ran on various cable stations.
Spring 1996; Spring & Fall 1997
Borough-wide cable spots in English and Spanish announce the expansion of recycling to include new materials, including junk mail, magazines, and paper bags; new types of beverage containers; and small metal appliances.

Before expanded recycling goes into effect throughout the city, an interim campaign features celebrities Jerry Orbach, Oscar the Grouch, then-Mayor Rudolph Giuliani with Yankees manager Joe Torre, and the Dance Theater of Harlem promoting recycling.
Fall 1997; Spring & Fall 1998
DSNY launches the blue and green recycling bin animated characters to promote expanded recycling throughout the City’s five boroughs. The ads ran in English and Spanish on broadcast and cable stations. From this point forward, the blue and green bin characters become regular features of the Department’s public education campaigns.
