March 15 - 19 is National Flood Safety Week
March 15 - 19 is National Flood Safety Week
National Flood Safety Awareness Week, and the recent rainstorm remind us that severe weather can cause significant damage in NYC. There are steps New Yorkers can take to reduce flood damage risk. If you live in a flood-prone area, keep materials, such as sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, and lumber, on hand to help protect your home. Consider getting flood insurance.

Con Edison and Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) continue to restore electricity throughout the city. OEM reminds residents without power to turn off appliances that will go on automatically when power is restored, keep refrigerators closed as much as possible, and check on neighbors with special needs.

OEM Tip of the Week

OEM Tip of the Week: Foil Floods In Your Neighborhoods
This past weekend a Nor'easter dropped almost four inches of rain on the city. The National Weather Service issued flood advisories for all counties and warned New Yorkers that streets, underpasses, drainage areas, and other low lying spots would flood first.

If you live in a flood-prone area, clearing off catch basins before a storm can help increase drainage and reduce flooding. Locate the catch basins in your area and make sure they are functioning at capacity before the next big storm.
