TLC Announces New Group Ride
Stand on the Upper East Side

New Service is Part of Mayor Bloomberg’s Plan
To Increase Transit Options in Underserved Areas

Beginning June 27, the MTA will discontinue the X90 express bus that travels between the Upper East Side and the Financial District. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) has responded to the requests of passengers of the bus line to offer an alternative transportation option in the neighborhood.

The TLC has established a yellow taxi group ride stand on York Avenue between E. 70th & E. 71st Streets in conjunction with the existing group ride stand on 79th Street & York Avenue. Group Riders must share a taxi with at least one other passenger for a fare of $6.00 per person. Group ride service from both stands is available from 7 AM – 10 AM, Monday through Friday. Taxicabs will be expected to enter the FDR Drive South via the E. 73rd Street entrance and drop-offs can begin at Pearl Street, along Water Street, as far as the World Financial Center. On the Road to the Taxi of Tomorrow

On December 17, 2009, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) announced that the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Taxi of Tomorrow project. This is an effort to upgrade the existing taxi fleet to better meet the needs of passengers, drivers, owners, and the City as a whole. Submissions to the RFP were due as of May 27, 2010.

The goal of the RFP is to seek a highly-qualified original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that has the knowledge and practical experience necessary to bring our vision of the next generation of taxicab to fruition, representing all the stated qualities below:

• Meets highest safety standards
• Superior passenger experience
• Superior driver comfort and amenities
• Appropriate purchase price and on-going maintenance and repair costs
• Sustainability (minimized environmental impact throughout the vehicle’s life cycle)
• Minimal physical footprint (with more useable interior room)
• Universal accessibility for all users with a goal of meeting ADA guidelines (wheelchair accessible)
• Iconic design that will identify the new taxi with New York City

New For-Hire Vehicle Rules

We have created a Web site to help you understand the new for-hire vehicle rules. These new rules will change how for-hire vehicles look, operate, and the requirements necessary to receive and maintain your license.

The Web site has been separated into two sections, one for licensee’s and base owners and the other for passengers.  Each section provides links based on the information you need.  Below you will also find additional links to assist drivers in understanding the inspection process, help drivers locate camera installation shops, and see the models that have been approved by the TLC.
